Satyameva Jayate: The Majestic Symbol of India's Soul and Sovereignty

Adopted on 26 January 1950, the Indian National Emblem is a powerful adaptation of the Lion Capital of Ashoka at Sarnath, a timeless symbol of wisdom, strength, and moral authority. Originally carved from a single block of polished sandstone, the capital features four lions standing back to back atop an abacus, adorned with high-relief sculptures of an elephant, galloping horse, bull, and lion, all separated by Dharma Chakras. In the official state emblem, only three lions are visible, the fourth concealed from view, with the bull to the right, horse to the left, and a prominent Dharma Chakra at the center. The bell-shaped lotus base is omitted, but below the abacus, in bold Devanagari script, are the profound words from the Mundaka Upanishad: Satyameva Jayate, “Truth Alone Triumphs,” capturing the spiritual and ethical essence of the Indian Republic. →

Manindra Agrawal: The Mathematical Visionary Advancing India’s Scientific Legacy

Manindra Agrawal is a distinguished Indian mathematician best known for co-developing the groundbreaking AKS primality test, a landmark discovery in number theory and computer science. Born in 1966, he serves as a professor at the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. In 2002, along with his students, he introduced the first deterministic polynomial-time algorithm to test whether a number is prime—an achievement that brought global recognition to Indian mathematics. For this extraordinary contribution, he was honored with the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, one of India’s highest scientific accolades.

Beyond his research accomplishments, Manindra Agrawal represents intellectual courage, innovation and dedication to knowledge. His journey reflects the power of curiosity and persistent inquiry, proving that groundbreaking discoveries can emerge from focused academic pursuit. As an educator and mentor, he continues to inspire young mathematicians and researchers to explore boldly, think critically and contribute meaningfully to science. His life’s work stands as a motivating reminder that disciplined thinking and passion for learning can reshape the frontiers of human understanding.
Co-creator of the AKS primality test and Padma Shri recipient in 2013, Manindra Agarwal is the Dean of IIT, Kanpur. The genius has won a host of other awards for his contribution to the broad field of mathematics.
