India and Maldives discussing free trade agreement, investment pact

India and the Maldives have initiated discussions to negotiate a comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and an Investment Treaty, marking a significant step towards strengthening bilateral economic ties. This announcement was made by Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri on Tuesday, reflecting the deepening of strategic and commercial relations between the two nations.

The proposed FTA and investment pact aim to enhance cross-border trade, attract mutual investments, and streamline regulatory frameworks to facilitate ease of doing business. These agreements are expected to create new economic opportunities, particularly in sectors such as tourism, infrastructure, and technology, which are pivotal to the Maldivian economy and align with India’s regional growth objectives.

In addition to trade and investment, the two countries are exploring new avenues of cooperation, particularly in the renewable energy sector. Foreign Secretary Misri highlighted that sustainable energy solutions, including solar and wind power, could become key pillars of collaboration. This aligns with India's broader commitment to green development and the Maldives' vulnerability to climate change, positioning both countries to benefit from joint initiatives in clean energy and environmental resilience.
