The oldest surviving Indian book

The oldest surviving Indian book

The oldest surviving Indian book is Christiya Vanakkam, a Tamil text that is the revised edition of the original Doctrina Christa. It was published on October 20, 1578, from Quilon (now in Kerala). A rare surviving copy is preserved in the Harvard University Library. The second page of the book notes it was printed at the press of the 'Saviour' on the date mentioned.

Christiya Vanakkam is a Tamil translation of a Portuguese religious work attributed to St. Francis Xavier. The translation was carried out by Fr. Henrique and Fr. Manuel de San Pedro. The original Doctrina Christa was first printed by Portuguese Jesuit missionaries in Goa in 1560, and its Tamil version emerged in 1564. This publication marks a significant milestone in the early history of printing in India.
