Does Alcohol Evaporate Out of Food When Cooked? Why some boozed-infused dishes might give you a hangover...,
Lager-spiked beef chili, beer-broiled bratwursts, coq au vin, chicken marsala, pork brined in rum. Ah, nothing says delicious quite like alcohol-saturated dishes, especially when it comes to beer or wine-infused meat: tender, moist, and downright delectable.
Of course, if you’ve ever watched a chef on TV or cracked open a cookbook to make one of these recipes, you’ve probably come across advice like, “Let the dish simmer for a few minutes to cook out any remaining alcohol.”
This begs the question: does alcohol actually evaporate out of food when cooked? Yes and no. Read on for the skinny on cooking with booze.
Why You Might Get Burned by Your Next Flambé
In 1992, a team of researchers from the US Department of Agriculture’s Nutrient Laboratory took part in an in-depth study exploring alcohol retention during food preparation. They started by examining perhaps the most iconic alcohol-based dish of them all, the flambé.

The Burial Cliffs of Sagada and Their Hanging Coffins Taking burial traditions to new heights!
Believe It or Not!, there are cemeteries suspended from cliffs in Sagada, Philippines! They were put there by indigenous people following ancient traditions, which are said to stem from the belief that the higher the dead are to the sky, the more elevated their spirits are in the afterlife!
Because the coffins are attached and suspended at incredibly high points on the cliffs, they are seemingly unreachable and have attracted tourists from all over the world.
Six Feet… Up?
The practice dates back thousands of years but is no longer prevalent, with burials on the cliffs only taking place once every few years!
When it does occur, the body is wrapped tightly in fabric and carried up the mountain to be placed in its coffin. Some coffins are noticeably shorter; this is because it was once common practice to fold the deceased into the fetal position, sometimes breaking bones in the process, since it was believed the body should leave this world as it entered it.

Nightmares
How Do You Fight a Nightmare? With Science. Sleep paralysis demons, beware.
Why Do We Have Nightmares?
Before we start our fight, let’s understand the enemy. Nightmares occur during REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep, the stage where our brains are most active, and dreams—pleasant or horrifying—take center stage.
Unlike their dreamy counterparts, nightmares are often linked to heightened emotional responses, especially fear and anxiety. They’re like our brain’s way of playing out our deepest fears, unresolved conflicts, or even just a large portion of extra spicy food (or too much pizza) before bed.
Nightmares aren’t just a product of modern stressors, though. They’ve haunted humanity since we first learned to sleep in caves. Cultures worldwide have long grappled with the meaning of nightmares, attributing them to everything from restless spirits to divine warnings.
The Nightmares That Fight Back: Sleep Paralysis
For some people, nightmares don’t end when they wake up. Sleep paralysis—a condition where the body remains immobilized while the mind is partially awake—often comes with vivid hallucinations of shadowy figures or otherworldly creatures like the Hat Man. It’s a waking nightmare that has been scaring the wits out of people for centuries, including the Hmong people’s Dab Tsog evil spirit, believed to suffocate its victims and the Old Hag folklore in Western cultures.
