Creating a Pearl Takes Much More Than Just a Grain of Sand

Mother-of-pearl? It's a grimy parasite.
Throughout history, the notion of an oyster’s pearl being born from a grain of sand has been the story of romance. The making of a pearl stems from a process that has been quickly popularized and, to some, may seem like common knowledge.

It would be quite a challenge to find someone who has not heard of the legendary transformation from a mere grain of sand to a valuable gem. But in reality, this isn't all true. So how exactly does a pearl come to be?
It Doesn’t Add Up
It's true that when an irritant works its way into an oyster, or any mollusk for that matter, it is gradually coated in layer after layer of richly lustrous nacre. This is the mollusk’s defense mechanism to protect its body from intruders. The process will eventually form a pearl after several years as the layers surrounding the irritant get thicker. But is the grain of sand the common irritant?
Mollusks live at the bottom of the ocean floor, a habitat covered in endless miles of sand. Through the movement of waves and other sea creatures, not only does sand coat the ocean floor, but it also floats amongst water as well. If sand were the common ingredient behind every shimmering pearl, the ocean would be filled with these prized and precious gems. It’s also quite an uncommon occurrence when debris, or any other irritant, does make its way into the mollusk’s shell, proving the pearl to be a true rarity.

The Real Culprit
Now that we know the main ingredient of a pearl is more than a measly grain of sand, we must ask, what irritant is responsible for the pearl’s beauty? The answer is a biological intruder: a parasitic organism. When an aggressive parasite manages to bore through a mollusk’s shell, it wedges itself deep within the organs and soft tissues. The mollusk is triggered to defend itself using its mantle to form a barrier against the parasite.
The mantle is a very unique secretory organ that covers the inside of the mollusk’s shell and is in charge of producing the mesmerizing pearly substance known as mother-of-pearl, or nacre. Coating the intruders with nacre, the mantle adds many layers of protection and eventually turns the grimy parasites into shimmering pearls. A mollusk can typically secrete 3 or 4 concentric layers of nacre each day, which would measure to be around one one-thousandth of a millimeter, or one micron, making the layers very thin.

It takes at least two years for a mollusk to produce a natural pearl of any substantial size, 3-5 mm. In addition to this lengthy process, the odds for the production of a natural pearl are about one in 10,000 mollusks, at best. This explains why pearls are extremely rare and can fetch very high prices.
From this interloping irritant and years of work, a precious gem from the bottom of the ocean is born. Some would wish for the simplicity of a grain of sand, but, like many things in life, the process behind a pearl is far more intricate and astounding.

The world is your oyster, so grab it by the pearl!

The Roman Feast of Death: Macabre Dining Experiences

Emperor Domitian went as far as making sure the room and food were all a stark black color.
One word that’s commonly used to describe the Roman Empire is decadence. This wasn’t the case for the warriors and workers, of course, but the emperor’s world was one of glorious luxury, toga parties, and lavish feasts. There’s no doubt that a Roman feast must have been an event to remember indeed.

Luxuriously decorated rooms, elaborate entertainment, and of course, the finest Roman fare. From sow’s udders to raw oysters and dormice, some extraordinary dishes were served, among those Romans rich enough to put on such a lavish event (and those important enough to warrant an invitation). You’d probably expect the emperor to put on the most decadent feast of all, and one of those emperors really excelled himself at one particular event. This is the story of Domitian’s Roman feast… of death, a macabre, memorable, and probably somewhat horrifying meal.

Emperor Domitian And His Frightful Feast
Roman emperors, as a whole, have developed something of a reputation for being ruthless and brutal. They had one of the highest-profile and most challenging positions in the ancient world and weren’t beyond bumping off opponents, critics, and threats in order to obtain and maintain them. With vicious arena games and the constant expansionist warfare, death was an everyday reality of life in the Roman Empire.

Domitian reigned during the first century CE, and was very unpopular among Rome’s ruling class for his cruelty and capriciousness. A ruthless ruler, he would seize the property and wealth of opposition in the senate before having them killed. Developing an increasing fear for his own life (Roman emperors were assassinated with alarming frequency after all), it seemed he had a way of seeing and inflicting death wherever he went. Who better, then, to host a banquet themed around the concept of death?

You Can Have Any Color, As Long As It’s Black
Harry Potter fans will remember the Deathday Party celebrated by Nearly Headless Nick, Gryffindor’s resident house ghost, in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Nick’s ghostly friends were all invited, the room was deathly cold with dark, gloomy decorations, a band playing the musical saw was howling away, and the food was moldy and disgusting (to give it a stronger ‘flavor’ the ghosts imagined they could almost taste). This might be how you’d imagine Domitian’s iconic ‘feast of death’ to have looked, sounded, and tasted, and you wouldn’t really be far wrong!

This most unique and macabre of soirees is reported to have taken place in the year 89 BC. It was something of a garish Halloween party, Roman style. Everything from the naked bodies of the servants to the food and the room itself was stark black. Domitian had much more in store for his esteemed guests, however.

What Was on the Menu?
According to a translation of Cassius Dio, “all the things that are commonly offered at the sacrifices to departed spirits were likewise set before the guests, all of them black and in dishes of a similar color." Sounds delicious; thanks, Domitian. His honored guests, whom Dio described as “the foremost men among the senators and knights,” surely knew of the Emperor’s fear of and ghastly retribution against those major Roman players who displeased him, and so it’s probably understandable that sophisticated dinner conversation was a little lacking on their part. In fact, according to Dio, “on the part of everybody but Domitian there was dead silence, as if they were already in the realms of the dead.” They surely feared that they soon would be!

Domitian had considered every little detail when it came to his event. Were there personalized place settings? Of course there were. The thoughtful emperor had tied them into the theme of the event with all the attentiveness of an overzealous party planner, with Dio going on to comment that “he set beside each [guest] a slab shaped like a gravestone, bearing the guest's name, and also a small lamp, such that hang in tombs.” Now these are the little details that make any party… well, bone-chillingly horrifying.

What Happened Next?
Well, then. We have Domitian and his knights and senators, sitting in a room that looked like your average Tim Burton movie set. What you’ll really want to know now is this: What happened to the attendees? Did the feast of death end in… well, death? Domitian’s reputation precedes him, and you might expect so. No, it didn’t, as it happens: Everybody left in peace rather than in pieces after the emperor had finished discussing, as Dio put it, "only... topics relating to death and slaughter.” A fun night indeed.

The Aftermath And The Possible Reason For The Macabre Feast
The ancient Roman historian noted that more surprises still were to come, even after everybody had left the terrifying event. When everybody arrived home from the banquet, they were reportedly given gifts via messenger from Domitian.

They included, Dio states, “the dishes that had been set before them at the dinner, which were constructed of very costly material.” And quite right too. Have you been horrified out of your wits by your Emperor at work? You may be entitled to compensation... in the form of fancy tableware.

But Why?
As to why exactly Domitian wanted to hold such an event (his infamy notwithstanding), it actually isn’t as unusual as it may seem. Memento mori, or “remember you must die” in Latin, is a notion that was often mused upon by the Romans, and they sometimes gave each other grim gifts such as small skeleton figures at parties or feasts. Think of it as a much less colorful and joyous take on the Mexican holiday Dia de los Muertos.

All that talk of death and slaughter, all that terrifying his people, would ultimately catch up with Domitian. Like so many Roman rulers, his demise was plotted by a varied band of conspirators, and he was assassinated in September 96 AD, just seven years after this feast of death is believed to have taken place.

Unbelievable Robberies

The Most Unbelievable Robberies Of 2023

Move over George Clooney! These thefts are more bizarre than Hollywood’s version of a Vegas heist.
Some of the weirdest robberies and thefts in recent memory will blow your mind. Sure, they don’t boast big players like George Clooney or Brad Pitt, but that doesn’t make them any less insane. From the case of a dime stash worth hundreds of thousands to a lightbulb thief, 2023 has seen some doozies. Heck, even a 15-foot-long Dairy Queen spoon went missing this year, and we’re little more than four months into the mayhem.
Keep reading as we explore some of this year’s most mad-capped thefts (so far), and the colorful characters caught red-handed.

The Dime Heist Worth Hundreds of Thousands
Almost a decade ago, The Street conducted a fascinating survey of 3,500 American drivers. They wanted to find out how much the average individual keeps in spare change rolling around their car. While personal numbers came in at a mere $22 of pennies, nickels, and dimes, the grand total for all US residents tallied up to a whopping $2.4 billion!
Of course, some people bat well above average, as is the case with one truck driver in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Instead of having a mere $20 or so in change, the tractor-trailer carried $750,000 in dimes! (Yes, you read that right.) Not surprisingly, burglars couldn’t resist the temptation. A group broke into the truck around 6 am, absconding with at least $100,000 in heaps of dimes.
Law enforcement officers for the “City of Brotherly Love” don’t know how many robbers participated in the heist, let alone how they transported so much metal at once. But they did find a trail of dimes scattered throughout the parking lot. Apparently, they’re still tallying coins to calculate precisely how much of the shiny stuff disappeared without a trace.

The Case of the Vanishing Lightbulbs
When Evan Souders of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, first reported lightbulbs from his porch missing, it left many people scratching their heads. After all, the fragile glass objects aren’t especially valuable. But over time, their theft adds up, as Souder can attest. Initially assuming the event to be isolated, Souder replaced the bulbs on his porch only to have them taken again. And again. And again.
Finally, in desperation, he decided to install a security camera to get a better idea of what was going on. Within a few days of the camera’s installation, Souder caught the bulb thief on film. Footage shows a male perp who looks inside the home before grabbing one light fixture. A car is also visible in the driveway during the incident.
So, what’s the deal when it comes to the disappearing illumination? Officials still don’t know. But some people on the Next Door app have speculated it has something to do with drug use. What do local police have to say about the bizarre incidents? Dillon Quirk of the Oklahoma City Police Department explains, “This could be considered a police matter as it is larceny … As far as intentions, I could not speculate.” Hopefully, the OKC Police Department will shed more light on the subject soon.

Ocean’s Eleven Style Heist Takes a Bite Out of Apple
Seattle Coffee Gear recently became the epicenter of a bizarre and intricate heist to rob a neighboring Apple store blind. After gaining after-hours access to the café, thieves cut a 24-by-18-inch hole into the shared wall between the coffee shop and the hi-tech store, making off with more than 436 iPhones. All told, the ambitious endeavor resulted in a loss of roughly $500,000 in merchandise.
How did the thieves do it without getting caught? The crime occurred on April 2nd at 7 pm, outside of regular operating hours. Eric Marks, regional manager of Seattle Coffee Gear, explains, “I’m surprised we were the conduit for them to get to the Apple store. I had no clue we were so close or adjacent to them.”
Since the bizarre incident, Apple Store staff has moved quickly to secure their location by changing locks and assessing damages. So far, damages sit at $1,800. They may have trouble collecting the cash, however. As it turns out, the burglars excelled at their jobs, leaving behind no traces. Not even a stray fingerprint. Sure, these robbers never made it to “Sin City.” But we’re guessing Danny Ocean and Jimmy Foster would still give them props for ingenuity and execution.

The Thief With the Heart of Gold
When it comes to the case of Bonnie Gooch, a familiar saying comes to mind. A leopard never changes its spots. But that doesn’t mean said leopard has to lack empathy. You see, Gooch has a history of robbing banks. The 78-year-old has two past convictions. In 1977, she stole from a bank in California. And in 2020, she held up a bank in the Kansas City suburb of Lee’s Summit.
So, after her parole for the second robbery ended in November 2021, it’s no surprise she reverted to her old, thieving ways. This time, she went after a financial institution in Pleasant Hill, Missouri. While getting older hasn’t necessarily made Gooch wiser, that doesn’t mean she wants to ruffle any feathers.
Demanding 13,000 small bills via a robbery note, Gooch included the caveat, “Thank you, sorry I didn’t mean to scare you.” Despite her worries about upsetting the teller, the would-be bank robber was in no mood to wait. Surveillance footage shows her banging on the counter and ordering the teller to speed up. Although she managed a speedy getaway, the wannabe Bonnie (sans Clyde) met justice two miles from the scene when police apprehended her.

A 15-Foot Spoon Points to a Mammoth Crime
If Paul Bunyan lived today, we’d have to blame him for this last crime. It all started when Phoenix residents noticed the 15-foot-long red spoon garnishing their local Dairy Queen missing. A frantic search provided few clues. More than a week passed without a sign of the massive scarlet Blizzard-devouring implement.
Nevertheless, residents weren’t about to give up on the beloved object worth approximately $7,000. Enter Michael Foster, 52, an inveterate Pokémon Go player. During one of his virtual scavenger hunts at a grassy school playground, Foster came across the colossal spoon. In shock, he texted a picture to his wife, explaining, “It’s the spoon.” In response, Foster’s wife prompted him to call the police.
After police arrived, Foster and a school maintenance worker managed to schlepp the big eating utensil over the fence. Next, officers strapped it to the hood of their vehicle, channeling an Aunt Edna National Lampoon vibe. What else do local officers know about the case? They have surveillance video of two men and one woman making off with the big red spoon before loading it onto a large flatbed towed by a pickup. The suspects remain at large.
