Anup Jalota – The Bhajan Samrat of India
Anup Jalota is a legendary Indian singer, best known for his soulful renditions of bhajans (devotional songs) and ghazals. Coming from a family of musicians, he is the son of Purshottam Das Jalota, a prominent devotional singer. While born in Uttarakhand, Anup Jalota’s music career took shape in North India, including in Madhya Pradesh, where devotional music has a deep cultural presence. Anup Jalota gained immense popularity in the 1970s and 1980s with his melodious voice and deep spiritual expression. Some of his most famous bhajans include “Aisi Laagi Lagan,” “Rang De Chunariya,” and “Main Nahi Makhan Khayo.” He brought bhajan singing to the mainstream, performing not just in temples and spiritual gatherings but also on television and international stages. Apart from devotional music, he has also sung ghazals and light classical songs, and has represented Indian culture globally through music. He received the Padma Shri in 2012 for his contribution to Indian music. Today, Anup Jalota remains a respected figure in the world of devotional and classical Indian music, continuing to inspire generations of music lovers.
