Arunoday Mondal

UNSUNG HEROES

Arunoday Mondal, popularly known as Sundarbaner Sujan, is a physician from West Bengal who was awarded the Padma Shri in 2020 for his work in medicine. He left his job at Dr. B. C. Roy Memorial Hospital for Children in 1980, chose not to depend on government support, and has for decades been offering free healthcare in the remote Sundarbans region. He runs a charitable clinic called Sujan, established around 2000, through which he treats over 12,000 patients annually, providing free medicines, conducting medical camps, and travelling long distances (about 160 km one way from Kolkata) every weekend to reach underserved people in Hingalganj and nearby areas.
