Founder of the Maratha Empire | Visionary King | National Hero
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was one of India’s greatest warrior kings and a visionary leader, born in 1630 at the Shivneri Fort in present-day Maharashtra. He founded the Maratha Empire, which challenged the dominance of the Mughals and other regional powers through smart warfare, diplomacy, and people-centric governance. Shivaji was known for his military brilliance, particularly his use of guerrilla tactics, and for building a strong navy—one of the first Indian rulers to do so. He constructed and fortified over 300 forts, creating a powerful defense network. But beyond warfare, he was a deeply progressive ruler—promoting religious tolerance, supporting farmers, protecting women, and ensuring justice for all. In 1674, he was formally crowned as the Chhatrapati (Emperor) at Raigad Fort. Shivaji Maharaj remains a symbol of courage, administrative excellence, and patriotism—revered not only in Maharashtra but across India for his leadership and love for Swarajya (self-rule).
