Chunangat Kunjikavamma was a fearless freedom fighter, social reformer, and the first woman President of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), elected in 1938. Hailing from the Chunangat family in Malappuram district, she emerged as a key figure in Kerala’s political landscape during the Indian freedom struggle at a time when very few women had public roles.
She actively participated in Salt Satyagraha, Khadi promotion, and anti-caste movements, often mobilizing women across communities to join nationalist protests. Known for her strong will and commitment, she donated personal jewelry and land for the national cause, and after independence, supported Vinoba Bhave’s Bhoodan movement by donating land to the landless.
