Dipa Karmakar (b. 9 August 1993) is India’s first female gymnast to compete in the Olympic Games and one of Tripura’s most celebrated sports icons. Born in Agartala, she overcame congenital flat feet—a condition usually considered a disadvantage for gymnasts—through years of rigorous training under coach Bishweshwar Nandi. Dipa rose to global fame at the 2016 Rio Olympics, where she narrowly missed a medal, finishing 4th in the women’s vault final, performing the extremely difficult Produnova vault, earning the title “Produnova Girl of India.” She has won multiple international medals, including a historic bronze at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and a bronze at the 2015 Asian Championships. Recognized for her achievements, she received the Padma Shri (2017) and the Khel Ratna Award (2016). Dipa Karmakar’s journey from modest beginnings in Tripura to the world stage has inspired millions, making her a true symbol of perseverance and sporting excellence.
