Dr. M. S. Swaminathan

Tamil Nadu’s Hall Of Fame

Dr. M. S. Swaminathan was a world-renowned Indian agricultural scientist, often referred to as the "Father of the Green Revolution in India." Born on August 7, 1925, in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, he dedicated his life to improving food security and fighting hunger through science. His pioneering work in genetics and plant breeding, especially in developing high-yielding varieties of wheat and rice, played a key role in transforming India from a food-deficient country to a self-sufficient one during the 1960s and 1970s.

Working closely with leaders like Norman Borlaug and the Indian government, Dr. Swaminathan led agricultural reforms that greatly increased crop productivity and helped avoid famines. He also founded the M. S. Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF), which focuses on sustainable agriculture and rural development. Honored with numerous awards including the Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and World Food Prize, Dr. Swaminathan passed away on September 28, 2023, leaving behind a legacy that continues to impact millions of lives in India and around the world.
