Dr. Vikas Mahatme

UNSUNG HEROES

Dr. Vikas Mahatme (born 11 December 1957 in Wathoda-Shukleshwar, Amravati, Maharashtra) is a Padma Shri-Awarded ophthalmologist, social entrepreneur and politician. He founded the Mahatme Eye Bank & Eye Hospital in Nagpur in 1986, which has carried out over 180,000 eye surgeries (including tens of thousands free of cost), trained more than 1,500 ophthalmologists, and established branches/vision centres in several places including Amravati, Gadchiroli, Pune, and Mumbai. He was a Member of Parliament in Rajya Sabha (2016-2022) representing Maharashtra, is active in several health and welfare committees, works for upliftment of the Dhangar community (including support for ST reservation), and has introduced innovations in ophthalmic surgery (e.g. “Woodcutter’s Nucleus Cracking” for phacoemulsification) along with community outreach (mobile eye units, eye donation movement).
