Ganga Dussehra

Uttarakhand State Celebrations

Celebrated to honor the goddess Ganga, where people take a holy dip in the river.

Divine Origin and Significance of Ganga Dussehra
Ganga Dussehra is a Hindu festival celebrating Goddess Ganga’s descent from heaven to earth, usually in Jyeshtha (May–June). Devotees believe that taking a holy dip in the Ganga on this day washes away ten kinds of sins, symbolizing purification of body and soul. The festival highlights the sacred connection between divinity, nature, and humanity, invoking peace, prosperity, and spiritual upliftment. It is a day of faith, gratitude, and reverence toward the holy river, emphasizing devotion and moral cleansing.

Mythological Legends and Ritual Practices
The festival is rooted in the legend of King Bhagirath, who performed penance to bring Ganga to earth to purify his ancestors’ ashes. Lord Shiva controlled her descent by capturing the river in his matted locks. Devotees perform rituals such as Ganga Aarti, chanting Vedic hymns, offering flowers, diyas, and sweets, and floating lamps on the river. These practices create a sacred atmosphere, reinforcing devotion and the divine significance of the Ganga.

Spiritual and Cultural Observance
Ganga Dussehra is celebrated with fervor in Haridwar, Rishikesh, Varanasi, and Prayagraj, where thousands gather along the ghats for ritual baths and evening aartis. The sight of floating diyas illuminating the riverbanks creates a mesmerizing spectacle. The festival also emphasizes river preservation, reminding people to respect natural resources. Ganga Dussehra blends spiritual devotion, cultural heritage, and ecological awareness, celebrating both divine purity and harmony with nature.
