Hangpan Dada was a courageous soldier from Arunachal Pradesh who became a national hero for his extraordinary bravery and sacrifice. Born on October 2, 1979, in Borduria village of Tirap district, he served in the Assam Regiment and was later attached to the Rashtriya Rifles, an elite counter-insurgency unit of the Indian Army. On May 26, 2016, during an anti-terror operation in Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir, Havildar Hangpan Dada displayed exceptional valor by single-handedly eliminating three heavily armed terrorists before succumbing to injuries. His selfless act saved many lives and significantly weakened the enemy’s offensive. In recognition of his unmatched courage and sacrifice, Hangpan Dada was posthumously awarded the Ashok Chakra, India’s highest peacetime gallantry award, on January 26, 2017. He is remembered not only as a brave soldier but also as a humble and dedicated son of Arunachal Pradesh who gave his life for the nation. His legacy continues to inspire countless youth from the region to join the armed forces and serve the country with honor. To honor his memory, the “Hangpan Dada Memorial Trophy” was instituted to promote football and volleyball among the youth of Arunachal Pradesh, reinforcing his legacy as a hero both in life and after.
