UNSUNG HEROES

Hanumant Kendre, known as the “Jaldoot of Marathwada,” is a water conservationist from Nagdarwadi village in Nanded, Maharashtra, who transformed his drought-hit village into a model of year-round water security. Motivated by hardships faced in his childhood, he led a watershed project covering 1,014 hectares, which has since expanded to over 50 villages, through community participation, shramdaan (voluntary labour), and revival of local water practices. His pioneering work gained national attention through Satyamev Jayate and inspired the Marathi film Paani, making him a symbol of sustainable, people-led water management in rural India.
