Jhanda Mela

Uttarakhand State Celebrations

Celebrated in Dehradun during Holi, with a flag-hosting ceremony to mark the auspicious occasion.

Historical Origins and Sacred Significance
Jhanda Mela, celebrated in Dehradun during Holi, honors the arrival of Guru Ram Rai, the eldest son of Guru Har Rai, in the 17th century. Centered around the Guru Ram Rai Darbar Sahib, the festival is marked by the hoisting of a grand religious flag, or Jhanda, symbolizing faith, unity, and divine presence. Devotees gather from across the country to witness this sacred ritual, reinforcing spiritual traditions and communal devotion that have endured for generations.

Ceremonial Grandeur and Devotional Practices
The festival’s centerpiece is the Jhanda Rohan, the flag-hoisting ceremony held in the Darbar Sahib courtyard. The flag, adorned with sacred knots and draped in cloth, represents the prayers and wishes of devotees. Accompanied by hymn chanting, drumbeats, and conch shells, the event is a spiritually charged spectacle. Pilgrims also engage in Langar, Kirtans, and Seva, reflecting Sikh values of humility, equality, and service, creating an atmosphere of devotion and joy.

Cultural Unity and Festive Spirit
Jhanda Mela is also a celebration of cultural harmony, transforming Dehradun into a vibrant hub of festivities. Colorful processions, devotional music, and gatherings showcase the city’s spiritual heritage, while local markets thrive with crafts, sweets, and offerings. The event fosters communal bonding and a sense of belonging, uniting people from diverse backgrounds. Jhanda Mela thus honors Guru Ram Rai’s legacy while celebrating faith, tradition, and social cohesion.
