K. R. Narayanan was the 10th President of India (1997–2002) and the first Dalit to hold the country’s highest constitutional office. Born in a poor Dalit family in Uzhavoor, Kerala, he overcame significant social and economic challenges to become a respected diplomat, scholar, and statesman. He studied at the London School of Economics and later joined the Indian Foreign Service, serving in key diplomatic roles. As President, Narayanan was known for upholding the Constitution with integrity and often used his office to subtly question and guide the government on important matters. He brought dignity and depth to the role, often described as the “conscience keeper of the nation.” His journey from a marginalized background to the presidency remains a powerful symbol of social justice and democratic possibility in India.
