Karimul Haque is a tea garden worker from Dhalabari village in Jalpaiguri district, West Bengal, who became famous as the “Bike-Ambulance Dada” for using his motorcycle to transport the sick and injured from remote villages (about 20+) to hospitals free of cost. Motivated by the death of his mother, who could not get timely medical transport, he began this service around 1998, often driving up to 40-45 km over difficult terrain. He earns a modest income from tea estate work (~₹4,000/month), part of which he spends on fuel, bike-maintenance and medicines; he also conducts first-aid camps in the region. In recognition of his selfless service and impact on rural healthcare access, he was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2017.
