Kunwar Singh

 Bihar’s Hall Of Fame

Kunwar Singh was a legendary freedom fighter from Bihar who played a crucial role during the First War of Indian Independence in 1857 (also called the Sepoy Mutiny or the Indian Rebellion of 1857). Born around 1777 in Jagdishpur, near Arrah in Bihar, he was a zamindar (landlord) and a respected leader of the region. Despite being over 80 years old at the time of the rebellion, Kunwar Singh displayed extraordinary courage and leadership. When the uprising against British rule began, he mobilized local forces and led guerrilla-style warfare against the British East India Company troops in Bihar and neighboring areas. His tactical brilliance and relentless spirit made him a symbol of resistance and inspired many across India. Kunwar Singh’s contribution was significant because he revived the spirit of rebellion in Bihar, and his actions helped keep the freedom movement alive in the region despite limited resources. He passed away in 1858, shortly after the rebellion was suppressed, but his legacy as a fearless patriot and folk hero remains celebrated in Bihar and India.
