M. G. Ramachandran (MGR) was a legendary Indian actor, politician, and philanthropist who left a lasting impact on Tamil Nadu’s cinema and politics. Born on January 17, 1917, in Sri Lanka and raised in Tamil Nadu, MGR gained immense popularity as a film star, known for his roles as a heroic, kind-hearted protagonist. His on-screen image of justice and compassion won the hearts of millions, making him one of the most beloved actors in Tamil cinema.
MGR entered politics through the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) but later founded his own party, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) in 1972. He served as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for three consecutive terms from 1977 to 1987. His government focused on social welfare schemes, especially for the poor and marginalized—most famously the midday meal scheme for school children. MGR passed away on December 24, 1987, but his legacy lives on through his reforms, his party, and the continued love of the people.
