Madhusudan Das (1848–1934), often honored as “Utkal Gourav” (Pride of Odisha), was a pioneering lawyer, social reformer, and nationalist leader who played a crucial role in the formation of a unified Odisha state. Born in a modest family, he overcame numerous obstacles to become one of the first Odia graduates and a successful lawyer. His legal acumen and dedication helped him gain prominence in the British Indian judicial system.
Madhusudan Das was deeply committed to the social and economic upliftment of Odisha. He advocated for the promotion of education, women’s rights, and the eradication of caste discrimination. Politically, he was a leading figure in the movement for the political unification of Odia-speaking regions, which were then fragmented under different provinces. His efforts were instrumental in the eventual formation of Odisha as a separate province in 1936. Beyond politics, he worked to promote industrial development and established several institutions to support Odia culture and identity. Madhusudan Das remains a towering figure in Odisha’s history, symbolizing courage, intellect, and patriotism.
