Maharaja Radha Kishore Manikya

Tripura’s Hall Of Fame

Maharaja Radha Kishore Manikya (1862–1896/1897–1909) was one of the most progressive rulers of Tripura, remembered for his patronage of education, culture, and modern administration. Born in 1862, he ascended the throne in 1896 and reigned until his death in 1909. During his rule, he laid the foundation of several institutions that shaped modern Tripura, including the Maharaja Bir Bikram College’s precursor institutions and schools aimed at spreading higher education. A great patron of art and architecture, he commissioned the construction of the magnificent Ujjayanta Palace in Agartala, which remains one of the most iconic landmarks of the state. His reign emphasized modernization while also preserving Tripura’s rich cultural and literary traditions. Maharaja Radha Kishore’s vision and reforms paved the way for the achievements of his successor, Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya, in the 20th century.
