Makar Sankranti/Tusu Parab

Jharkhand State Celebrations

Celebrated in the winter, featuring folk dances and ceremonies.

Welcoming the Harvest Season
Makar Sankranti, known locally in Jharkhand as Tusu Parab, is a joyous winter festival that celebrates the end of the harvest season and the beginning of longer, sunnier days. It is observed when the sun enters the zodiac sign of Makara (Capricorn), marking an auspicious time of transition and renewal. For the tribal and rural communities of Jharkhand, this festival is deeply tied to agricultural life and gratitude for a bountiful harvest. The celebration symbolizes hope, prosperity, and the harmony between humans and nature. Villagers come together to offer prayers for good fortune, while the aroma of freshly prepared traditional foods fills the air. It is a time of rest, reflection, and rejoicing after months of hard agricultural work.

Tusu Songs, Dances, and Rituals
The highlight of Tusu Parab is the performance of Tusu songs, which are spontaneous folk compositions sung by women and girls near riverbanks or open fields. These songs often express themes of love, courage, and devotion, passed down through generations as part of oral tradition. The festival also features lively folk dances, where participants move in rhythmic harmony to the beats of traditional drums like the mandar and dhol. Women carry beautifully decorated idols of Goddess Tusu, crafted from clay and adorned with flowers and colorful paper, symbolizing fertility and well-being. The celebrations culminate with the immersion of Tusu idols in rivers, accompanied by singing, laughter, and collective prayers for prosperity.

Cultural Unity and Modern Celebrations
Makar Sankranti and Tusu Parab hold immense cultural significance, fostering a sense of unity among Jharkhand’s diverse communities. The festival transcends religious and regional boundaries, drawing participation from people of all ages and backgrounds. It also promotes the preservation of tribal art forms, music, and oral traditions that form the heart of Jharkhand’s cultural identity. In modern times, Tusu Parab has gained prominence through fairs, exhibitions, and cultural programs organized by the state’s cultural department. Urban centers like Ranchi and Jamshedpur host special performances and folk competitions to honor this rich heritage. The festival stands as a vibrant reminder of the state’s agrarian roots and the enduring connection between people, nature, and tradition.
