Makar Sankranti / Uttarayan

Uttarakhand State Celebrations

A festival marking the sun's transition into the makara (Capricorn) zodiac sign.

Celestial Transition and Spiritual Significance
Makar Sankranti marks the sun’s transition into Capricorn, signaling the start of its northward journey (Uttarayan) and the arrival of longer, warmer days. Celebrated on January 14, it symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance. Devotees believe that taking a holy dip in sacred rivers like the Ganga or Godavari purifies the soul and brings blessings of prosperity, health, and spiritual upliftment. The festival embodies renewal, positivity, and the cosmic rhythm of nature.

Rituals, Traditions, and Regional Celebrations
Makar Sankranti is observed with diverse customs across India. In North India, sesame seeds (til) and jaggery (gur) are offered to signify warmth and togetherness, while in Maharashtra, people exchange sweets saying “Tilgul ghya, goad goad bola.” In Tamil Nadu, the festival is celebrated as Pongal, thanking the Sun God for a bountiful harvest. Gujarat and Rajasthan celebrate Uttarayan with vibrant kite-flying, and in Punjab, it coincides with Lohri, marked by bonfires, folk songs, and dance. Each region brings its unique flavor to the celebration.

Symbolism of Gratitude and Renewal
At its heart, Makar Sankranti is a festival of gratitude toward nature, the Sun, and the Earth. Farmers celebrate the harvest and give thanks for life’s sustenance, while the exchange of sesame and jaggery sweets spreads warmth and goodwill. The festival also encourages self-reflection, new beginnings, and acts of charity, promoting compassion and generosity. Makar Sankranti thus celebrates both cosmic cycles and human values, blending spiritual devotion with cultural joy and communal harmony.
