India’s First Non-Congress Prime Minister | Freedom Fighter | Champion of Simplicity
Morarji Ranchhodji Desai was born on February 29, 1896, in Bhadeli village, near Bulsar (now Valsad) in Gujarat. He began his career in the British civil service but resigned in protest and joined Mahatma Gandhi’s freedom movement, becoming a dedicated nationalist and an early participant in civil disobedience campaigns. In 1977, at the age of 81, he became the 4th Prime Minister of India and the first non-Congress leader to hold the post, heading the Janata Party government after the Emergency. Known for his austerity, discipline, and administrative integrity, he was a strong advocate of democracy and transparency in governance.
