Purushottam Laxman Deshpande, affectionately known as P. L. Deshpande or simply Pu La, was one of Maharashtra’s most cherished literary figures. Born in 1919 in Mumbai, he was a master storyteller, playwright, humorist, actor, musician, and a cultural icon whose works continue to resonate with generations of Marathi readers and audiences. Pu La was celebrated for his witty, insightful, and deeply human portrayals of everyday life. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan and Sahitya Akademi Award for his contributions to literature and culture. Pu La remains an evergreen symbol of Marathi literature and wit, fondly remembered as the voice of Maharashtra’s heart and humor.
