P. V. Narasimha Rao

Telangana’s Hall Of Fame

Pamulaparthi Venkata Narasimha Rao (1921–2004) was a distinguished Indian politician and the 9th Prime Minister of India, serving from 1991 to 1996. Born in Karimnagar district of Telangana, Rao is often hailed as the “Father of Indian Economic Reforms.” During his tenure, India faced a severe economic crisis, and he took bold steps to liberalize the Indian economy by opening up markets, reducing government control, and encouraging foreign investments. These reforms laid the foundation for India’s rapid economic growth in the decades that followed. Besides his economic legacy, Rao was a highly educated and multilingual leader, fluent in several Indian languages and well-versed in history and literature. Before becoming Prime Minister, he held various key positions including Home Minister and Foreign Minister. His administration was also marked by significant political challenges and social changes. Despite facing criticism and controversies, Rao’s leadership is credited with modernizing India’s economy and steering the country through a critical phase of transformation. He remains one of the most influential figures in India’s post-independence history.
