Prema Purao, a freedom fighter in Goa’s struggle for independence, demonstrated extraordinary courage transporting arms despite being shot in the leg by Portuguese police. After independence, she founded Annapurna Mahila Mandal, supporting destitute women and children, and was awarded the Padma Shri for her dedication to social welfare.
