Raghunath Murmu

    Jharkhand’s Hall Of Fame

Raghunath Murmu (1905–1982) was a celebrated linguist and cultural icon from Jharkhand, best known for inventing the Ol Chiki script for the Santali language. Before his invention, the Santali language, spoken by the Santhal tribal community, was written using Latin, Devanagari, or Bengali scripts, which were inadequate for representing its unique sounds. Murmu created Ol Chiki in the 1920s to preserve and promote Santali language, literature, and culture. His contribution is considered a landmark in tribal cultural identity, helping Santali speakers to read and write in their own script and fostering a sense of pride and unity. Today, the Ol Chiki script is officially recognized and taught in schools, and Raghunath Murmu is honored as a pioneer of tribal education and cultural revival in Jharkhand and neighboring states.
