UNSUNG HEROES

Rahibai Soma Popere (b. 1964), known as the “Seed Mother,” is a tribal farmer and conservationist from Kombhalne village, Akole block, Ahmednagar district, Maharashtra. With no formal schooling, she has devoted her life to preserving indigenous crops: conserving and multiplying dozens of native seed varieties across ~17 different crops (millets, pulses, paddy, hyacinth bean etc.), supporting self-help groups, maintaining seed banks, and promoting agro-biodiversity. She was awarded several honours including BBC’s 100 Women (2018), the Nari Shakti Puraskar (2019) and the Padma Shri (2020) for her contributions to agriculture and traditional seed conservation.
