UNSUNG HEROES

Sangkhumi Bualchhuak is a distinguished social activist from Mizoram, India, renowned for her unwavering commitment to women's rights and empowerment. Born in 1948, she pursued higher education in Shillong, Meghalaya, benefiting from scholarships that enabled her to study despite financial constraints.

Her advocacy was instrumental in the passage of pivotal legislation in 2014, including the Mizo Marriage and Divorce Act and the Mizo Inheritance of Property Act, which abolished discriminatory practices and granted women equitable rights in marriage, divorce, and inheritance. In recognition of her transformative impact on Mizo society, Sangkhumi Bualchhuak was honored with the Padma Shri award in 2021, one of India's highest civilian honors.
