Subhas Datta

Subhas Datta (born 21 November 1949 in Howrah, West Bengal) is a prominent Indian environmental activist and chartered accountant who has been campaigning for over three decades. He is especially known for filing many Public Interest Litigations (PILs), such as for Howrah city’s environmental concerns and the protection of trees in non-forest areas, and for being instrumental in the creation of the West Bengal Trees (Protection and Conservation in Non-Forest Areas) Act, 2006. Datta also played a central role in establishing India’s first Green Bench in the Calcutta High Court. His work covers many issues, air & water pollution, garbage burning, sewage & drainage, city traffic & green space conservation and he has been honored with several awards for his environmental and civic activism.
