Taukeer Alam Lodha is a young and dynamic conservationist, birder, and educator from the Van Gujjar tribal community residing around the Rajaji National Park in Uttarakhand. As a member of this traditionally forest-dwelling, nomadic pastoralist community, Taukeer has emerged as a powerful voice for indigenous rights, environmental education, and cultural preservation. Despite limited access to resources, he has documented local wildlife, translated over 170 children’s stories into the Van Gujjari language, and written three books that highlight tribal knowledge, traditions, and ecological wisdom.
Taukeer has worked tirelessly to bridge the gap between conservation policies and indigenous communities, promoting the idea that tribal people are not threats to the forest but its custodians. His educational outreach has impacted over 4,000 students, empowering tribal youth with ecological knowledge while preserving their cultural identity. He has been honored with prestigious recognitions like the Sanctuary Nature Foundation’s Wildlife Service Award, the Inlaks Shivdasani Fellowship, and the Tata Samvaad Fellowship for his work in tribal storytelling and conservation. Taukeer Alam Lodha stands as an inspiring example of how grassroots youth leadership can drive meaningful change for both people and the planet.
