Thanga Darlong

UNSUNG HEROES

Thanga Darlong (1914–2020), Folk Music Preserver was a legendary musician from the Darlong community of Tripura, celebrated for his mastery of the Rosem, a traditional bamboo wind instrument. Born in 1914 in Muraibari village, he dedicated over a century of his life to preserving the fading sounds of tribal folk music. At a time when younger generations were moving away from traditional art forms, he continued performing, teaching, and keeping alive the melodies of his ancestors. His contributions were finally recognized when he received the Padma Shri in 2019, making him a symbol of cultural resilience. Even in his later years, Thanga Darlong inspired the youth to value their heritage, proving that true guardians of culture work silently yet powerfully. He passed away on 2 October 2020, at the age of 106, leaving behind a legacy as one of Tripura’s greatest unsung champions of folk tradition.
