Ustad Amir Khan – Maestro of Hindustani Classical Music
Ustad Amir Khan was one of the greatest vocalists in the history of Hindustani classical music, and the founder of the Indore Gharana. Born in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, he developed a unique singing style that combined intellectual depth with aesthetic beauty. His music was known for its slow-tempo elaboration (vilambit laya), rich emotional expression, and spiritual intensity. Amir Khan's style was influenced by various traditions, but he created a distinct identity for the Indore Gharana, blending the melodic elaboration of Kirana Gharana, the rhythmic intricacy of Bhendibazaar Gharana, and the emotional depth of Rampur Gharana. He was also a poet and often used his own compositions under the pen name "Sur Rang." He is widely respected for restoring a meditative and introspective quality to Khayal singing. Ustad Amir Khan also contributed music to films; his rendition in Satyajit Ray’s "Jalsaghar" is especially remembered. He was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and Padma Bhushan for his contributions to Indian classical music. His legacy continues to influence generations of vocalists in the Hindustani tradition.
