On October 12, 2023, Uttarakhand set a historic cultural milestone when nearly 3,000 folk artists from remote villages of Pithoragarh came together to perform the traditional Chholiya and Jhauda dances. The performance took place at an impressive altitude of 5,338 feet (1,627 meters) above sea level during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Devbhoomi Uttarakhand. Accompanied by the powerful beats of Dhol and Damaun, the dancers created a breathtaking spectacle that celebrated the state’s rich folk traditions. This massive gathering earned recognition in the World Book of Records for being one of the largest high-altitude folk dance performances, showcasing the unity and cultural pride of Uttarakhand’s people.
