The Uttarayani Fair, celebrated every year in January (around Makar Sankranti, usually on 14th January) at Bageshwar along the confluence of the Saryu and Gomti rivers, is among Uttarakhand’s grandest cultural gatherings. Traditionally a fair for trading goods, it has evolved into a hub of folk music, dance, and social festivities, where artists perform chholiya, jhora, and baira dances along with devotional singing. The fair attracts an estimated 2 to 2.5 lakh visitors each year, including pilgrims, traders, and tourists, who participate in the cultural programs spread over several days, making it one of the state’s largest folk celebrations.
