The longest Indian National Flag measuring 3.2 km in length and 3.2 meters in width was unveiled by Dr Paul Raj Engineering College at Bhadrachalam in Khammam district Andhra Pradesh on 26 January 2012 as part of the 63rd Republic Day celebrations the initiative organized by the students was aimed at instilling a strong sense of patriotism and unity among Indians and saw thousands of volunteers carrying the tricolour from Meduvai village to the bridge entrance with an overwhelming spirit of participation.
According to college secretary K Abraham six tailors and 16 students worked for 20 days to stitch the massive flag together weighing nearly 800 kg and covering an area of 10240 square meters the organisers spent Rs 1 million on the project while a helicopter captured aerial views and showered flower petals over the participants breaking the previous record of a 2.6 km long national flag displayed at Visakhapatnam in 2011 and turning the temple town into a sea of tricolour echoing with fervent chants of Vande Mataram and Mera Bharat Mahan.
