The longest railway platform in India

The longest railway platform in India

Kharagpur Railway Station, located in the Paschim Medinipur district of West Bengal, has the longest railway platform in India, measuring 1,072.5 meters. Originally 716 meters long, the platform was extended twice, first to 833 meters, and then to its current length. Excluding subway platforms like those in Chicago, it is also the longest railway platform in the world. The station plays a key role in Indian Railways’ eastern network.

Kharagpur is also known for being the home of the first Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), established in 1951. It houses one of the largest railway workshops in India, contributing significantly to railway maintenance and development. The station’s importance extends beyond transportation, symbolizing both academic excellence and industrial strength. Kharagpur remains a prominent landmark in West Bengal’s infrastructure and education landscape.
