The tallest bridge in India

The tallest bridge in India

The Panvalnadi Bridge, located on the Panval River in Ratnagiri district, Maharashtra, is currently the tallest bridge in India. Its tallest pier stands 64 meters above the riverbed, and the bridge spans 424 meters in length. Built for the Konkan Railway, it was the first bridge in India constructed using the incremental launching technique. The structure features a single-cell continuous prestressed concrete box girder with nine 40-meter spans and two 30-meter end spans, supported by hollow octagonal reinforced concrete piers.

In 1995, the bridge won the Most Outstanding Concrete Structure in India Award from the American Concrete Institute. However, it is set to lose its title soon, as the Konkan Railway is constructing two taller bridges on the Katra-Laole railway line in Jammu & Kashmir. The bridge over the Chenab River will reach a height of 359 meters, while the one over Anji Khad will be 189 meters tall, surpassing Panvalnadi’s record. These upcoming bridges represent new milestones in India’s railway infrastructure.
