Kandla Special Economic Zone (KASEZ) in Gujarat, established in 1965, holds the distinction of being Asia’s first SEZ and India’s pioneering multi-product SEZ. Spanning 1.2 square miles, it is strategically located just 9 km from the modern, all-weather Kandla Port, enhancing its export potential. KASEZ has played a vital role in boosting India’s trade and industrial growth over the decades.
Recognizing the success of Export Processing Zones (EPZs), India introduced the Special Economic Zones (SEZ) Policy in April 2000 to address challenges like regulatory complexities and infrastructure gaps. This policy aimed to create world-class infrastructure and a stable fiscal regime to attract larger foreign investments. Today, SEZs continue to be key drivers of India’s export-led economic growth.
