The last and first Indian Governor General of India

The last and first Indian Governor General of India

C. Rajagopalachari, popularly known as Rajaji, was the last and first Indian Governor General of India, serving from 1948 to 1950 after succeeding Lord Mountbatten. With the adoption of the Indian Republic in 1950, the title of Governor General was abolished and replaced by the President of India. Rajaji played a crucial role during India's transition from British rule to independence. His leadership marked a significant moment in Indian constitutional history.

Born on December 10, 1878, in Thorapalli village of the then Salem District, Tamil Nadu, Rajaji was a respected statesman, scholar, and freedom fighter. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1954 and held many key positions, including Premier of Madras Presidency in 1937 and Chief Minister of Madras State from 1952 to 1954. He also served as India’s Home Minister, succeeding Sardar Patel. Mahatma Gandhi referred to him as “the keeper of my conscience.” Rajaji passed away on December 25, 1972.
