Norman Gilbert Pritchard, an Anglo-Indian athlete born in Calcutta, was the first Indian to participate in the Olympic Games. He made history by winning two silver medals at the 1900 Paris Olympics—in the 200 meters and 200 meters hurdles. Pritchard also reached the finals in the 110 meters hurdles and competed in the 60 and 100 meters sprints. He was the first Olympic medalist from India and the first Asian to win an Olympic medal.
Though of British descent, Pritchard was born and raised in India and later moved to England in 1905. Historical research suggests he competed for Great Britain, having qualified through the British AAA championships. However, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) officially credits his medals to India. Pritchard's achievement remains a unique part of India's Olympic legacy.
