Prakash Padukone made history in 1980 by becoming the first Indian to win the prestigious All England Badminton Championship, defeating Indonesia’s Liem Swie King. This landmark victory marked India’s arrival on the global badminton stage. He had earlier won his first major international title at the 1978 Commonwealth Games. Prakash also clinched titles at the London Masters, Danish Open, and Swedish Open.
Born on 10 June 1955, Prakash was introduced to badminton by his father Ramesh Padukone, a key figure in Mysore Badminton Association. He won both the National Junior and Senior titles in 1972 and held the senior title for seven consecutive years. Recognized for his excellence, he received the Arjuna Award in 1972 and the Padma Shri in 1982. His legacy continues to inspire generations of Indian shuttlers.
