The first Indian to win the Junior US Open title

Leander Paes became the first Indian to win the Junior US Open title in 1991, defeating Karim Alami of Morocco 6-4, 6-4. He had already gained prominence in 1990 by winning the Wimbledon Junior title and becoming the world No. 1 in junior rankings. Born on June 17, 1973, Paes is celebrated for his fierce determination and indomitable spirit on court. Though his singles career saw limited success, he made a mark in global tennis through doubles.

Leander Paes formed a legendary doubles partnership with Mahesh Bhupathi, winning multiple Grand Slam titles together. He has also delivered remarkable performances in Davis Cup matches, defeating higher-ranked opponents with grit. A significant highlight of his career was winning the bronze medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics in men's singles. His contributions have earned him a lasting legacy in Indian sports history.
