Drass, located in western Ladakh, holds the record for being the coldest inhabited place in India and the second coldest in the world after Siberia. In winter, temperatures can plummet to around -40°C. Despite its harsh winters, Drass enjoys pleasant summers, attracting trekkers and campers from around the country. Situated at an altitude of 3,230 meters, Drass lies 60 km west of Kargil on the Srinagar–Leh highway. The valley begins at the base of Zojila Pass, the Himalayan gateway into Ladakh. Drass also serves as a base for treks into the scenic Suru Valley. The people of Drass are primarily of Dard descent, an Indo-Aryan group believed to have migrated from Central Asia centuries ago.
