The largest delta in India

The largest delta in India

The Sundarbans is the largest delta in India, formed by the confluence of the Ganges, Brahmaputra, and Meghna rivers. This sprawling region of tidal waterways, mudflats, and mangrove forests stretches about 260 km along the Bay of Bengal. The Indian portion of the Sundarbans covers an area of 4,262 sq. km, with the rest lying in Bangladesh. It is an essential ecological zone, sustaining rich biodiversity.

Named after the Sundari trees that dominate its mangrove forests, the Sundarbans is spread over 54 islands across both India and Bangladesh. This unique ecosystem is home to a wide range of flora and fauna, including saltwater crocodiles and spotted deer. Most notably, it shelters the endangered Royal Bengal Tiger under a dedicated conservation program. The Sundarbans is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a vital part of India’s natural heritage.
