Lakshadweep, with an area of 32 sq km, is the smallest Union Territory in India. The islands lie in the Arabian Sea, extending from 8° N to 12° 20' N latitude and 71° 45' E to 74° E longitude. The islands north of 11° N are called the Amindivi Islands, while those south are known as the Cannanore Islands. Minicoy Island is situated at the extreme south of the territory.
Previously known as Laccadives, Minicoy, and Amindivi islands, the group was renamed Lakshadweep in 1973. All islands are coral in origin and include 12 atolls, three reefs, and submerged sandbanks. Out of the 27 islands, only 11 are inhabited, making it a unique and ecologically sensitive region.
