Cherrapunji in Meghalaya is renowned as one of the wettest places on Earth, receiving over 1200 cm of rainfall annually. Located 56 km from Shillong, it lies in one of the heaviest rain belts in the world. Cherrapunji's unique topography traps moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal, resulting in continuous and intense rainfall.
In recent years, nearby Mawsynram has rivaled Cherrapunji for the title of "Wettest Place in the World." Although Mawsynram sometimes records higher rainfall, the accuracy of its data is debated due to limited official meteorological infrastructure. In contrast, Cherrapunji has consistent records maintained by the Indian Meteorological Department.
