First colour film made in India

First colour film made in India

Kisan Kanya (1937) holds the distinction of being the first colour film made in India, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of Indian cinema. Produced by Imperial Film Co. and directed by Moti B. Gidwani, the film introduced Indian audiences to the possibilities of colour storytelling at a time when black-and-white films dominated the industry. The music, composed by Ram Gopal Pandey, featured 10 songs that were later released on Gramophone Records, adding to the film's cultural appeal.

The film's narrative revolves around themes of injustice and social inequality. It tells the story of Ramu, a kind-hearted peasant who is wrongfully accused of murdering an oppressive landlord. Shot using the Cinecolour process imported by Imperial Film Co., Kisan Kanya had a runtime of 137 minutes and starred Padmadevi, Jillo, Ghulam Mohammed, Nissar, Syed Ahmed, and Gani. Despite the late adoption of colour films in India, Kisan Kanya paved the way for future innovations in Indian filmmaking and remains a landmark in cinematic history.
